Metro Detroit’s newest home improvement guru?

Just ask Murray Gula, whose radio show Home Improvement recently debuted on mega-station WJR-760 AM.

Gula, 60, who has been answering home improvement questions on various low-powered Detroit-area radio stations for the past 12 years, made it to the broadcasting big leagues when WJR signed him to a one-year deal with long term renewal options.

Just prior to his June 29, 2002 premiere on the 50,000-watt station, he’d answered listener questions as "the Home Improvement Doctor" on the 500-watt WLLZ AM560 Radio Station.

"Being on the radio and talking with listeners is so exciting," said Gula shortly after his first WJR show. "It’s so rewarding to hear someone call back and say, ‘Boy, you really helped me.’

"Anyone can do a home improvement project. They just need a little guidance and encouragement sometimes."

During his inaugural WJR broadcast, station phone lines lit up throughout Gula’s three-hour show, with some callers waiting as long as 40 minutes to speak on air with him. Among these callers was Jennifer Granholm, Michigan’s attorney general and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, who dialed WJR with a personal welcome.

Although Gula was given the option to discuss topics of his choice, he told the call screener he’d take all questions. Queries ranged from how to clean oil stains off a cement driveway (use WD-40) to what a homeowner needed to do to install a stacked washer and dryer.

Not only did Gula know the answer to every question posed to him, but he also was able to give callers names of products, numbers of contractors and places to locate various supplies.

WJR Operations Manager Steve Stewart said he thought Gula’s first weekend of broadcasting at WJR was "spectacular."

"The phones lines were jammed the entire time. I don’t think it can get much better than that," Stewart said. "Our listeners had a lot of questions and Murray did a great job answering them."

Gula’s resume is extensive, including work as a master electrician and a licensed builder.

Today, he owns Michigan Construction Protection Agency in Oak Park MIchigan, a nationwide construction notice and lien filing service. Gula and MCPA also provide consumer advocacy services to the public, including presenting information on how to hire contractors and how to file construction complaints with various state agencies.

Gula, started the company 14 years ago employing only family members, including his wife Carol, son Jason and daughter Karen. Now, the MCPA payroll includes his wife Carol, son Jason and eight non-family employees, .

In the office and on the air, Gula brings a strong work ethic to whatever he does. In the past, he even made house calls.

Now he willingly gives out his e-mail address to answer home improvement questions for total strangers. Just contact Murray.. murray@mcpanet.com  - Office (248) 968-0200
